In the course of trying to find ideal discs for the site, and maybe obsessively avoiding repetition, and while churning away at other projects in the background, I thought this would be yet another chance to push the boundaries a little.
This record is a beautiful example of a mixture of styles. Decca acquired several labels that had once been strong and were now fallen giants Brunswick, Edison Bell, and some of the Champion catalog, among othersand when they began pressing music for the recovering American consumer, they charged a competitive 35 cents a piece.
Eubanks was from East St. Louis, and was also a Creath and Morton alumnus from sessions going back to According to legend he learned clarinet Bachelors Life - Various - 14 Cajun Hits New Orleans musicians, and his playing as well as his spirited vocal make this more of a Horace Eubanks solo record than anything else.
Inthere were two versions of this song available, one by the Cuarteto Machin and one by Don Azpiazuthat this band could of heard. I was introduced to this record by a Los Angeles collector and it took a good 4 years to find a nice copy. And in true sleeper fashion, it was just a few dollars. He passed away in Horace Eubanks unfortunately died inZeke Manners And His Band* - Twin Trouble / Grouchy Gaucho (Shellac) apparently spending some years institutionalized.
Good stuff! Interesting, John! Thanks for listening and checking in. Before and after, the primary saxophone choro artist in Brazil was the amazing Luiz Americano, though for the most part I think his performances are notably more weepy on the sax compared to this though I love them. Thanks for your reply, and thanks for introducing me to some great music.
I know very little about choro—I have a grand total of one album of that music, Cafe Brasil, a Teldec CD —so I appreciate your comments. Incidentally, a friend of mine introduced me to your blog; I look forward to exploring your archives. Thank you again. Thanks, John! Replying to your recent comment. Such great sound, too. With the Latin beat and the dodgy Spanish vocals, this could almost be from Central Africa in the late s!
Thanks, as always. Thanks for the fun Zutty recording and its fine quality. Any chance you know more about what Zutty did, in addition to these recordings for Decca, during ? My understanding is he ended a Chicago run 3 Deuces and at some point headed back to NYC… any other details of which you are aware from that year in his professional life?
Thanks for posting this. Would you mind and contact me for some more latin jazz Haldolium - Cry / Heaven I would love to hear from you.
Kind regards, John. Austin — you nailed it! This is a cover of that song — and I bet it was likely learned from the Cuarteto Machin version, or the one by Don Azpiazu Wanna Lot of Loveboth issued in The Azpiazu version does the same.
